There are a few set events we have each year on the playa and we are coming up to the first for this year. The following is a little bit of poetry you may like to add some more stanzas to, as a way to show what things would interest you in the event. The best rhyming couplets of 9 syllables will be added on, and maybe read on stage at some point.
The Equinox is fast approaching and balanced eggs are good for poaching Artists old, and especially new Answer the call, come Home we want you Opposites make for level scales Let imaginations weave their tales A time for community once more Friends come together step to the fore...
For those wanting some further details of Equinox on the playa this year, here we go:
DATES: Friday 27th to Sunday 29th of March
WINNING THEME: “Balance”
Equinox is the time when the day and night are of equal length, it is also the start of both Spring and Autumn. In the virtual world we can mix all things together, so we can have bats flying down to sip the nectar from the new spring flowers in the daytime, or autumn leaves transforming into butterflies at night. As always our only limitation is our imagination.
The really important bit: We want YOU.
Builders, experienced or new and barely able to place a block (we have people to help you learn to build).
Artists of all kinds photographers, painters, builders, poets, dancers, DJ's, musicians, designers, and ideasmen, show us what you have, and be part of it all.
This year we are trying hard to take all into account, welcome all time zones and all parts of the globe. With this in mind we like to remember that while Equinox is when day and night are in equal measure, it is also both Spring and Autumn/Fall at the same time with the Northern and Southern hemispheres. So what does Balance mean to you? Don't just give us your ideas (although at least that is good too), but join in and help make some of them happen. In the spirit of balance, experienced and inexperienced, long standing members and brand new additions to the community are welcome and encouraged to take a part.
If you have an idea, want to help, or offer yourself on the altar of.... hmm, don't think we are allowed to do that one, anyway, contact us. Send a note with any details of how you would like to be a part, or add to the poem to Huntress Catteneo, iSkye Silverweb, or any team member you know and feel comfortable with that can present for you.
Once again, we bring our unique style of winter hilarity to the playa, with snow and ice covering the dusty ground and Burners’ visions of the season scattered around. Santalarity is BURN2’s decommodification event, the antithesis of the typical rushed holiday season focused on profits and buying, on unrealistic expectations and joy found in aisle three.
Instead we ask, “What’s in the Box?” What do we want to give? We invite you to come to the playa, to observe artists’ interpretations of these questions, to ice skate, dance, drum and be present when we Burn the Box. Before the Box is burned messages left by visitors to the playa will be read, which shall express what they would like to give. To give without expectation of return. To give for the pure joy of giving.
Santalarity will be a 24-hour event, opening on Saturday, 13th December at 10:00 AM SLT/PST. The Lamplighters will kick off the event with an initial drumming. The Box will Burn on the 13th at 12:00 PM SLT/PST and again at 8:00 PM SLT/PST.
DJs and live performers interested in participating during the event can sign up using the form at http://burn2.org/santalarityperformance2014 and if there are questions about performance scheduling, contact BURN2 Performance Lead Larree Quixote inworld.
This year, we will create a caravansary that occupies the crossroads of a dreamland: a bazaar of the bizarre, wherein treasures of every sort, from every land and age, flow in and out to be flaunted, lost, exploited and discovered. This is not a tourist destination, but a home for travelers who come here bearing gifts. Amid the twisting and the turnings of its souk, participants will come upon an inexhaustible array of teeming goods and unexpected services.
Anyone may pose as 'merchant' here, and anyone may play a 'customer', but nothing in this strange emporium shall have a purchase price — no quid, no pro, no quo — no trade at all will be allowed in this ambiguous arcade. According to a rule of desert hospitality, the only thing of value in this 'marketplace' will be one's interaction with a fellow being.
Our desert inn will also be a scene of luxury and cultivated ease. An apron of fine carpets will spread out beneath the shade of portals that surround a courtyard. Here, travel-wearied pilgrims may relax, inventing pastimes as they watch the whirling world go by.
Workers of great wonders will be welcome here; fakirs, dancers, sadhus, seers and potentates will throng through this performance space, like figures that adorn the fabric of a silk brocade. The sounds of finger cymbals, chimes, and music of acoustic instruments will fill the air.
By night, bathed in the lambent glow of lanterns gently swaying overhead, fire spinners will perform around the Burning Man. This year's Man will rise directly from the desert floor and tower many stories high. Its massive torso will evoke a tiered pagoda; its ornate head will be a lamp that welcomes people home.
Bystanders become participants; participants share in the burning, spinning cacophony on the virtual Playa.
